TED CHAPMAN G1ALF

Ted Chapman G1ALF

This photo was taken at Wandlebury in 1986 and shows Ted behind a young Martin Cranage G8OFA conducting tests on 10 Ghz.  The photo shows him with binoculars which he took wherever he went so that he could enjoy one of his many hobbies, bird watching or twitching as it is known.

Ted served for several years on the committee of CDARC and was a founder member of the "Canal Boat Crew".  It was on the boat and at the many contests that we discovered his repartee of rhymes and ditties, many dirty, which would have us all in stitches, along with his stories of London post war as a Thames boatman and policeman.  His practical and engineering skills were put to good use on many occasions by the club, and he was a reliable chap.

He was a great help with our field activities, always being one of the first to offer assistance, having a great love of the outdoors. It was during one such activity, on the way to Mablethorpe for a Dxpedition, while towing our very big trailer that terminal damage was done to his car. The trailer tower suffered with poor balance and I can remember looking in my mirror seeing the car and trailer snaking all over the road coming down a hill   Ted did manage to get home with the tower in one piece, the car however had suffered serious damaged to the welded seams on the rear end.
