GEORGE BENTON G0OEL

George was one of what I called the early birds.  If there was a job to be done he would be the first there and usually be packing up to go home, having completed the set task, while the rest of us were still getting up.  Whether it was mast or tent erection or using his trusty bow and arrow to to reach a high branch for our aerials at Wimpole fete, you could rely on George to get the job done properly.

He was a great coach with his Civil and General engineering skills as well as the City & Guilds Amateur Radio Exam.  He would often start a sentence with "well Boy...."  but I think his favorite expression was "You don't breed lambs from lions boy"  These days he would be described as "politically incorrect", but was accurate in his observations, simply saying how things were.

The club continues the tradition Miep, his wife, and he started of meeting annually at the Longstowe village hall for our club picnic.  There you will find the memorial bench given by his friend's in the club in the Referees changing rooms.
